Eleanor took one slow breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Is that what you believe?” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It’s what the county registry shows,” Chloe said. “We checked.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Of course you did.” Eleanor set down her tea. “You checked the public database, sweetheart. The shallow one.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She gripped the armrests and stood. Chloe blinked \u2014 something in the old woman’s spine had changed. The slump was gone. In its place was something neither of them had seen before: seventy-two years of New England backbone, fully loaded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
