“Dad? Dad, where are you?” Oliver screamed, his voice swallowed by the gale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beside him, Cooper, a massive Golden Retriever, pressed his flank against the boy\u2019s trembling leg. The dog\u2019s ears were pinned back, his eyes darting through the swirling ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I can\u2019t walk anymore, Coop,” Oliver sobbed, sinking into a drift. “I\u2019m so tired.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cooper barked sharply, nudging Oliver\u2019s shoulder with a cold nose. He knew the “sleep” Oliver wanted was the kind you don’t wake up from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Move, Oliver! Get up!” the dog seemed to command with a frantic howl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Oliver\u2019s eyes flickered and closed. His breathing slowed to a shallow whisper as the -15\u00b0F air began to shut down his heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cooper didn’t hesitate; he began digging furiously beneath the roots of a fallen oak. He grabbed Oliver\u2019s collar and dragged the limp boy into the makeshift dirt-and-ice burrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The dog lay directly on top of the child, pinning him down with eighty pounds of living heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Stay warm, buddy,” the father\u2019s voice echoed in Oliver\u2019s fading mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Every few minutes, Cooper licked the ice from the boy\u2019s face, his rough tongue raw and bleeding. He growled at the darkness, a golden shield against the encroaching frost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By dawn, the search party\u2019s snowmobiles roared through the clearing, their lights cutting the gray mist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“There! By the oak!” a rescuer shouted, pointing at a frost-covered mound of fur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cooper was frozen stiff, a literal statue of ice, but he didn’t move until he saw Oliver\u2019s father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Is he… is he breathing?” the father gasped, falling to his knees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A paramedic pulled back the thermal blanket they\u2019d wrapped around the boy. “He\u2019s warm. His core temperature is stable.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“How?” the father asked, looking at the dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The dog,” the paramedic whispered. “He used himself as a heater. He\u2019s got severe frostbite, but he didn’t let go.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Oliver opened his eyes and reached out a shaky hand. “Cooper?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The dog let out a ragged, exhausted whimper and slumped into the father\u2019s arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cooper was rushed to an emergency vet where they saved his paws, though he\u2019d always walk with a slight limp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The “nanny” dog was awarded a hero\u2019s medal by the town, but his real reward was the spot right next to Oliver\u2019s bed. Every night, Oliver falls asleep with his hand buried in Cooper’s golden fur, safe from the cold forever.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
