Mark dragged his bleeding leg behind a jagged rock, the African heat replaced by a biting twilight chill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“He\u2019s in the rocks!” a voice shouted in a thick American accent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark checked his flare gun. One shot left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Just give it up, old man,” the lead poacher laughed, his boots crunching on the dry brush. “Nobody’s coming for you.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I’ve seen your faces,” Mark wheezed, clutching his side. “The authorities in D.C. will have those drone IDs by morning.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Then we’ll make sure you don’t live to see the sunrise,” the man sneered, leveling his rifle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Suddenly, the air didn’t just move\u2014it vibrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A low, guttural growl hummed through the earth, shaking the loose pebbles around Mark\u2019s boots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The poachers froze. “What was that? A leopard?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Too big for a leopard,” the second man whispered, his voice cracking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A massive shadow detached itself from the acacia trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was a lion, but not just any lion\u2014a beast so large he looked like a prehistoric relic, his mane a tangled crown of black and gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Shoot it! Shoot it now!” the leader screamed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The lion didn’t roar. He launched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was a 500-pound blur of muscle and fury, slamming into the lead poacher before the man could even pull the trigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The second man fired wildly into the tall grass, but the beast was a ghost, circling in the periphery of the flashlight beam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Help! Please!” the mercenary shrieked as he was dragged into the darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then, silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark held his breath as the giant predator padded toward his hiding spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The lion stopped five feet away, his amber eyes glowing like embers in the dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mark saw the scar on the left ear\u2014the jagged mark he had stitched with his own hands two decades ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Kari?” Mark whispered, his voice trembling. “Is that you, boy?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The lion huffed, a warm blast of air hitting Mark\u2019s face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The beast stepped forward and firmly pressed his massive, heavy head against Mark\u2019s shoulder, just as he had as a cub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By dawn, the rescue team found Mark leaning against the lion’s warm flank, safely guarded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The poachers’ gear lay shredded in the dirt, their “invincible” syndicate dismantled by a debt of honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
